PMC twenty5 23i film appraisal

Preamble

I said I would stop reviewing….. well I lied with this film appraisal of PMC’s twenty5 23i, a new model in their range. I’m going to continue with some product reviews, now and then, and if other means of sourcing products work, where I don’t have to deal with manufacturers who don’t even pay costs of this site, then I will. This could be through consumers loaning products, or manufacturers paying fees (which I think is reasonable) but which will not have any effect on my opinion, given this sites credentials.

As consumers ultimately benefit from my brutally honest approach and I stand apart from many review sites and offer properly independent reviews, I decided that I will see if a chargeable model works. This means if I rate a product and I think you will too (ie most), I will say. If the product is a comparative turkey against the competition and I think most would think so, sitting in with me doing comparisons and taking out preference, I’ll say that too. The bain of HiFi review sites is many don’t. It’s all just about advertising revenue and working in cahoots with manufacturers to SELL, SELL, SELL!

The videos also take a lot of time and work, planning, editing and filming b-roll. Mostly in the order of 3-5 full time days. I do this all myself and it is a creative process too.

So from now on I will post videos and written reviews to my subscription based Patreon page here. But I will offer sneak pre-views and basic information to this site, as well as news etc.

Teaser Film

In this appraisal of PMC’s new twenty5 23i speakers I give the low-down on;

  • Features and technical specs, and what this means pragmatically.
  • How it compares to the old twenty5 23 model I looked at and own.
  • What do these speakers sound like?
  • Are they value for money? – buying new and upgrading?

Some information from PMC (Keith Tonge) about upgrades;

There no plans for an upgrade kit to convert a twenty5 to a twenty5i.

It is impractical and would involve a complete crossover change including back panel, an increase in the HF rebate depth of the cabinet, replacement of the plinth bars and mounts, and if you wanted the newer grille fabric they would need to be recovered or replaced.

We only offer improvements to products when we know in complete confidence that it will benefit the customer.  We are not a marketing led company who simply stick on a badge and announce an upgrade.

The ecological question

It would not be ecologically viable to offer a factory upgrade from twenty5 to twenty5i.  A factory upgrade would be the only satisfactory way for the customer.

New packaging would have to produced, transported to the customer who could be in any global location, product collected, cabinet re machined and refinished. The used unwanted components and drivers would have to be disposed of as we cannot re-supply used drivers, (though they would still no doubt have plenty of life in them), new ones produced, tested and fitted. Then the product would be returned to the same customer via a retailer or local distributor.  The cost to the customer and planet would not be ideal.  I hope that makes sense.

ATL design PMC use

We would prefer if a customer wanted a buy a new better loudspeaker he bought a new PMC rather than another product that has been produced in a less than ecological sound way, transported across the globe and then disposed of within a few years as the quality wasn’t quite the ticket and it couldn’t be repaired.  The Used and second hand market for PMC as you probably know is very healthy….nothing goes to waste. 😊
